How to get to the Black River (Rivière Noire) Waterfalls?

To access the Rivière Noire Falls, head to the town of Saint-Claude, located at the foot of the famous Soufrière volcano. The starting point for the hike is at the Beausoleil picnic area, on the road up to Soufrière, which is accessible by car. It is recommended to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water, snacks, and a swimsuit to fully enjoy the pools.

Description of the Hiking Trail

The hike to the Black River Falls starts off easy, following a small, calm stream. The trail winds through the rainforest, and you can walk on low walls until you reach the dam. Once at the dam, you will need to find an unmarked path through the forest to continue your adventure. This part of the hike is not marked, which adds a touch of exploration.

To reach the waterfalls and pools, it is necessary to go up the Rivière Noire. The route becomes more technical as you progress, with passages where you have to climb using ropes. The walls are sometimes quite high and vertical, making these sections dangerous and reserved for experienced hikers.

However, less experienced hikers can enjoy this adventure up to the first ropes, where they can admire magnificent landscapes and enjoy the more accessible pools.

Stages of the journey:

  1. Departure : Park at the Beausoleil picnic area and follow the path towards the forest.

  2. Follow the watercourse : Walk along the small watercourse and continue along the low walls to the dam.

  3. Finding the path : From the dam, look for the unmarked path that goes into the forest.

  4. Going up the river : Follow the Black River up towards the waterfalls and pools. Be careful of the technical passages with ropes.

  5. "Jacuzzi" waterfall and hot river : Continuing, you will discover natural pools, a waterfall nicknamed "jacuzzi", and finally a hot water river.

Practical Tips for a Successful Hike

  • Best time to visit : The dry season, from December to April, is ideal for this hike. The trails are less slippery, and the pools are more pleasant for swimming.

  • Recommended equipment : Hiking shoes, swimsuit, towel, water, and sunscreen.

  • Safety : The hike becomes technical after the dam, especially when climbing with ropes. These sections are only recommended for experienced hikers. Others can enjoy the first parts without danger.
